Down-tuning moves every string. Drop tuning moves one.
The two terms get used as if they’re synonyms, and the confusion is understandable — both end with a lower-pitched guitar. But down-tuning shifts the whole instrument uniformly, while drop tuning drops only the lowest string, and that one difference changes which chord shapes suddenly become playable with a single finger. This page defines each properly against the standard pitch they’re both measured from, without repeating the tension-and-mixing material already covered for down-tuning.

Down-tuning lowers the entire instrument uniformly — every string drops by the same interval, most commonly a half step or a whole step. Standard tuning down a whole step becomes D-G-C-F-A-D: still six strings a perfect fourth apart from their neighbors (with the usual third between the G and B strings shifted along with everything else), just sitting a whole step lower across the board. Because every string moves together, every chord shape and every relationship between strings stays exactly where it was in standard tuning — a G-shape barre chord is still a G-shape barre chord, just sounding a whole step lower than its name would suggest at the same fret.
The cost is tension. D’Addario’s own string-tension guide is explicit that tension is a direct function of gauge, pitch and scale length together — drop the pitch on an unchanged gauge and tension falls with it, which is why down-tuned players frequently size up their string gauge to keep the feel and intonation stability they had in standard tuning.

Drop tuning is a narrower, more specific move: only the lowest string drops, by a whole step, while everything else stays where it was. The name comes from Drop D, the most common example — standard EADGBE becomes DADGBE, with only the sixth string moving. Guitar World’s own lesson on the tuning spells out exactly why that one change matters so much: dropping the sixth string a whole step puts it on the same note, D, as the fourth string, just an octave lower, which means a single-finger barre across the bottom three strings produces a full, correctly-voiced power chord that would otherwise need two fingers spanning two frets.
That one-finger shape is the entire point of drop tuning, and it’s a mechanical, playable-hand-shape change — not a general pitch shift. Every other string and every shape that doesn’t touch the lowest string is completely unaffected.

Down-tuning changes nothing about what a guitarist’s hands do — it changes how everything sounds. Drop tuning changes almost nothing about how the guitar sounds in isolation — it changes what a guitarist’s hand can physically reach with one finger instead of two. That’s why fast, alternating power-chord riffs built around a movable one-finger shape are a drop-tuning signature, while a down-tuned riff can use any shape from standard tuning verbatim, just transposed lower.
The two combine constantly rather than competing. “Drop C,” for instance, is a down-tuned whole step (making standard tuning’s baseline D-G-C-F-A-D) with the lowest string then dropped an additional step to C — still following the drop-tuning definition of “only the lowest string moves relative to the rest,” just applied on top of an already-lowered instrument rather than on top of standard pitch.

What is ‘Drop C’ if drop tuning only touches one string?
It’s both moves stacked. Down-tune the whole guitar a step first (standard EADGBE becomes D-G-C-F-A-D), then apply the drop-tuning move on top of that new baseline by dropping only the lowest string a further step, to C. The lowest string is still the only one that moves relative to the other five — it’s just that the other five had already moved together first.
Does down-tuning by itself require heavier-gauge strings?
Not strictly, but it’s the common fix for a real problem: per D’Addario’s tension relationship, the same gauge at a lower pitch carries less tension, which can mean more buzz and a looser feel. Many down-tuned players size up their gauge specifically to restore the tension they had in standard tuning.
Why doesn’t dropping one string throw off every other chord shape?
Because most standard chord shapes depend on relationships among the top five strings, which drop tuning leaves completely untouched. Only shapes that specifically include the lowest string change — and, per the mechanics above, they simplify rather than complicate.
Is there an ISO standard for drop tunings the way there is for concert pitch?
No. ISO 16 standardizes only the shared reference point — 440 Hz for concert A — that every tuning, standard or otherwise, is measured against. Specific alternate tunings like Drop D or Drop C are player and genre conventions built on top of that reference, not formal standards themselves.
