A riff is a motif that earns its repeats.
Heavy music leans on repetition harder than almost any other style, which means a riff has to earn every one of its repeats. This page works through the handful of transformation moves composers have used for centuries — sequence, inversion, retrograde, augmentation, diminution, fragmentation — then adds two heavy-music staples, the pedal point and the chromatic approach tone, and hands you a workbench to apply them to a riff of your own.
Six of the eight moves below are the standard motivic-transformation toolkit taught across music theory generally; two (pedal point, chromatic approach tone) are added here because of how constantly they show up in heavy-music riff-writing specifically.
01 — The Transformation Ledger

02 — Under The Riff
Two ideas that predate heavy music by centuries.
A pedal point is a single tone, usually the tonic or the dominant, sustained or repeated in the bass while the harmony above it moves and changes3. The pedal tone starts as a chord tone, briefly becomes a non-chord tone as the harmony passes through dissonant territory above it, then becomes a chord tone again when things resolve. In heavy music this maps almost exactly onto a drop-tuned low string held open while a riff moves on the strings above it — the same centuries-old device, just played through distortion.
A chromatic approach tone works differently: it is a note a half-step outside the prevailing scale that steps briefly into a target note from a semitone above or below, creating a small jolt of tension that resolves the instant it lands21. Slide a riff’s final note up from a half-step below instead of hitting it directly, and the same otherwise-diatonic phrase suddenly has a growl in it.

04 — On Repetition
Repetition is not laziness. It is the technique.
What heavy music usually calls a riff, classical terminology calls an ostinato — a musical phrase or rhythm repeated persistently, whether played on a single pitch, a handful of pitches, or with no pitch at all4. The vocabulary differs by tradition; the mechanism is the same one this whole page is about.
Research on repeated listening has found what psychologists describe as an inverted-U curve in how much a piece of music is enjoyed across repetitions: liking tends to rise with each repeat up to a threshold, then fall off with further repetition beyond that point — and more complex material takes more repetitions to reach that peak than simple material does6. Familiarity itself is one of the strongest single predictors of how much a piece is enjoyed.
Read against that research, the case for this page’s eight moves gets more concrete: a riff transformed partway through a section is not a different riff, so the familiarity a listener has already built up carries over — but it is different enough that the repetition clock resets a little, buying the idea more listens before fatigue sets in. That reading is this page’s own synthesis of the research above, not a claim made by the research itself.

05 — Common Questions
Straight answers, no hedging.
What is the difference between a riff and a motif?
Motif is the general music-theory term for the smallest recognisable musical idea in a piece — a short pattern of pitch and rhythm that the rest of the material grows from. Riff is the rock, blues and jazz-tradition word for a motif that is treated as a structural unit in its own right, repeated and cycled rather than developed once and left behind. In heavy music almost every riff is functionally a motif; the vocabulary difference is about tradition and repetition, not substance.
Why doesn’t augmentation or diminution automatically make a riff heavier or lighter?
Because both are purely rhythmic transformations — they stretch or compress note durations and change nothing about tuning, gain, distortion or register, which is where most of what listeners call “heaviness” actually lives. A diminished, faster restatement can sound more urgent and an augmented, slower one can sound more monumental, but neither is heavier in the tonal sense on its own.
Is a pedal point the same thing as a drone?
No. A pedal point is heard against harmony that keeps moving above it — the tension comes from that contrast. A drone is closer to a static backdrop, a sustained tone with little harmonic motion happening around it at all. Heavy music uses both, often in the same song.
Why single out pedal points and chromatic approach tones instead of sticking to the classic six transformation moves?
Because this page is deliberately pitched at heavy music rather than at music theory in general. Sequence, inversion, retrograde, augmentation, diminution and fragmentation are the standard motivic-transformation toolkit; pedal points and chromatic approach tones aren’t part of that classic six, but they show up constantly in how heavy-music riffs actually get written, so this page adds them on purpose rather than leaving them out for a tidier list.
