The low end has two instruments, not one.
Bass is the most under-covered instrument on most music-technique sites — usually reduced to “follow the kick drum.” This page covers what actually changes the sound: pick versus fingers, distortion on bass specifically, splitting a clean and a dirty signal, and exactly where bass and guitar compete for the same frequency space — with a visualiser you can point at your own tunings.

01 — Right Hand
Pick versus fingers is a tone decision.
A pick strikes the string with a sharper edge than a fingertip does, and the result is a brighter, more percussive attack carrying more treble harmonic content3. That extra edge is exactly what helps a fast, rhythmically busy bass line stay audible and tight against a wall of distorted guitar — the attack gives the ear something crisp to lock onto, and picking also makes it easier to accent specific hits precisely against the kick and snare.
Fingers give up some of that top-end snap in exchange for finer dynamic control and a warmer, rounder fundamental. That trade is worth making whenever a part needs to breathe, sit further back in the arrangement, or carry more expressive nuance than a rhythmically locked riff needs.
Neither is the “metal” choice or the “wrong” choice on its own — the two techniques solve different problems, and plenty of heavy bass parts are written specifically around which one they need.
02 — Signal Chain
Distortion on bass is a parallel problem.
Running a bass signal through distortion in series — the whole signal, one path, no split — changes more than the tone. Distortion tends to increase compression, cut into the low end and push energy up into the midrange, right into the zone where distorted guitars are usually sitting too2. Pushed too far, a heavily distorted bass on its own can lose the very weight it was supposed to add.
Parallel distortion is the standard fix: split the bass signal into a clean path and a distorted path, then blend the two back together with a mix or blend control21. The clean path keeps the low-end weight, note definition and natural dynamics; the distorted path adds grit, harmonic content and edge. Most dedicated bass-distortion pedals are built with exactly this blend control for that reason.

Method: all figures are standard twelve-tone equal-temperament values (concert pitch A4 = 440 Hz) drawn from a single cited note-frequency reference4. The 7-string guitar’s low B is not separately published in that reference, so it is computed from the same standard (two semitones below the cited D2) rather than sourced a second time — shown honestly as “computed” above rather than implied to be independently verified twice. Notice the bass D string and the drop-D guitar’s low string share the exact same fundamental.

Is a pick or fingers better for heavy bass?
Neither is objectively better — they are different tools for different jobs. A pick gives a brighter, more percussive attack with more treble harmonic content, helping a fast, tight bass line cut through a dense mix. Fingers trade some of that snap for finer dynamic control and a warmer fundamental.
Why use parallel distortion on bass instead of just running a distortion pedal in series?
Series distortion affects the whole signal, and distortion tends to increase compression, thin the low end and push energy into the midrange. Parallel distortion splits the signal into a clean path and a distorted path and blends them, so the clean path's low-end weight and dynamics survive underneath the distorted path's grit.
Why do bass and guitar collide in the mix even when they are playing different notes?
Because the collision is about frequency masking in a shared range — commonly the low-mids around 200–250 Hz — not about the fundamental notes matching. A bass's harmonic content and a guitar's low-mid body can both build up energy in that same narrow band even while playing entirely different pitches.
What is the actual fix for a muddy low end with bass and heavy guitars together?
Complementary EQ carving — deliberately reducing a frequency range in one instrument specifically where the other needs that space. In heavy-rock and metal mixes, this often means pulling low-mid content out of the bass in sections where wide-panned distorted guitars need the low beef, rather than just turning things up or down.
