01 — String Actions

The nine categories above group techniques by how you physically produce them. This second lens groups them by what structural job they do in a piece — folded in to cover ground the category list alone doesn't reach, and feeding the arrangement-arc line in your practice brief.

Attack Architecture

How a note begins: pick, finger, thumb or tap striking the string.

How a note is extended once struck: vibrato, e-bow, bowing, feedback.

Rhythm architecture (pick one, optional)

  • Ostinato-based — one fixed pattern repeats as the structural spine.
  • Call-and-response — phrases alternate between two rhythmic ideas or players.
  • Metric modulation — the felt pulse shifts while the actual tempo stays constant.
  • Additive meter — bars are built from uneven groups (2+2+3, 3+3+2).
  • Polymetric layering — parts of different bar lengths phase in and out of alignment.
  • Groove-locked — every part subordinates to one shared, steady pocket.
  • Free-time — rhythm is not fixed to a steady pulse at all.

Melody architecture (pick one, optional)

  • Motivic development — a short idea is varied, extended and transformed over time.
  • Call-and-response phrasing — melodic phrases answer one another like a conversation.
  • Modal center — melody orbits a fixed scale/mode rather than functional chord changes.
  • Chromatic tension-release — melody deliberately steps outside the key before resolving.
  • Drone-based — melody unfolds over a fixed, unmoving pitch center.
  • Sequence/repetition — a melodic shape repeats at different pitch levels.
  • Through-composed — melody develops continuously without repeating a fixed structure.

02 — Setup & Signal

Where the signal actually goes.

The conventional order pedals sit in, then two reference tables: instrument configuration and amp/cab/mic pairing. Pick one of each to anchor your practice brief.

Instrument
String vibration is converted to a raw electrical signal by the pickups.

Gain stage
Overdrive, distortion or fuzz shapes how hard the waveform clips before anything else touches it.

Modulation stage
Chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo or pitch effects vary conventionally placed after gain so they modulate an already-shaped tone.

Time stage
Delay and reverb are typically placed last among pedals so echoes and reflections repeat the finished, already-driven tone.

Preamp
The amplifier's own front end applies further gain and its tone-stack EQ.

Power amp
Drives the signal up to speaker level; on tube amps, pushing this stage hard adds its own, different-feeling compression from the preamp.

Speaker cabinet
Speaker size, count and voicing shape the frequency response before any sound reaches the room.

Microphone / capture
Microphone choice, distance and position across the speaker cone select which part of that cabinet's sound is recorded or reinforced.

A guitar part doesn't exist alone. Ninety rhythm-section patterns across kick, snare, hi-hat, overall groove feel, bass, sub-bass, extra texture and polyrhythm, each with an approximate frequency range and a note on how the guitar typically responds. Is the practice brief written fresh each time, or fixed content?

It's fixed content, recombined. Every technique, effect, player, role and pattern on this page is reference material written for the dashboard ahead of time. Selecting items composes them into a practice brief using a fixed set of if/then rules defined in this page's own code — every sentence the brief shows you traces back to a specific row or card above it.

What is a “practice brief”?

A short, structured reference sheet — setup, techniques, effects, tone target, session plan — assembled from whatever you've selected on this page, meant to be printed or read on a phone in a rehearsal room. It replaces flipping between ten browser tabs mid-rehearsal.

Are the genres on this page all real?

78 of the 100 genres listed are real, documented genres. The other 22 are openly invented mashups built for this dashboard, and every one of them carries a visible “coined” label wherever it appears in a table, list or the practice brief — never presented as a real genre.

Were the guitarist facts on this page checked?

The specific, checkable claims — Django Reinhardt's fretting-hand injury, Wes Montgomery's thumb technique, Tony Iommi's prosthetic fingertips, Albert King's reversed-strung guitar, Jimi Hendrix's restrung Stratocaster, Eddie Van Halen's tapping, B.B. King's “Lucille”, Robert Fripp's tape looping, Kevin Shields' tremolo-arm technique, and Michael Hedges' percussive harmonics — were independently checked against named sources before publishing (marked “checked” in Section 07's table). The remaining entries use general, well-established era/genre/technique characterisation rather than unverified specifics; see Sources below.

How was the colour-coding replaced?

Every category badge on this page uses a distinct symbol, a distinct border style (solid, dashed, dotted or double) for its broader family, and — wherever the source data includes an intensity or register value — a matching border weight and fill. The Sonic Spectrum uses a plain lightness ramp instead, since its 15 levels are ordered, not categorical. None of it depends on hue, so it reads the same in greyscale, print, or to a colour-blind eye.

No. Selections, the practice brief and the genre scores are all computed in your browser from the data on this page. Nothing is uploaded, logged or sent to a server by this tool.

Where the checked facts come from

This page states a great deal as reference (technique names, effect mechanisms, practice methodology) that doesn't need a citation because it isn't a factual claim about a real person or event. The specific, checkable claims — mostly in Section 07 and the frequency figures in Section 09 — are sourced below. Anything this pass could not verify to its own standard was softened or left out rather than asserted; see the note under Section 07's table.
