01 — String Actions

Every way a right or left hand can set a string moving, grouped into nine families. Tap a row to add it to your practice brief — category is always shown by symbol and border, never by colour alone, so it reads the same in print or to a colour-blind eye.

Rhythm architecture (pick one, optional)
- Ostinato-based — one fixed pattern repeats as the structural spine.
- Call-and-response — phrases alternate between two rhythmic ideas or players.
- Metric modulation — the felt pulse shifts while the actual tempo stays constant.
- Additive meter — bars are built from uneven groups (2+2+3, 3+3+2).
- Polymetric layering — parts of different bar lengths phase in and out of alignment.

Djent Chug
Level 10- Lock palm-muted low-string 16ths to a click before adding any syncopation.
- Keep the fretting hand's muting silent on string changes — no open buzz between chugs.
- Practice the accent pattern alone on a single dead-note before applying it to a real riff.
- Scoop the mid-range on the amp so the attack stays a click, not a growl.
- Layer a second, doubled take slightly off-time to feel how tight the pocket needs to be.
Shoegaze Wash
Level 06- Set chorus and reverb first, then find chord voicings that still read through the blur.
- Favor open-string drones under moving shapes so pitch centers stay anchored.
- Use the tremolo/vibrato bar for slow, continuous pitch movement rather than dive-bombs.
- Strum with a soft pick attack — the wash should smooth transients, not fight them.
- Practice fading chords in with a volume pedal instead of picking them dry.
Blues Lead
Level 07- Spend more time on finger vibrato speed and width than on note choice.
- Practice bending exactly to pitch against a sustained reference note.
- Leave space — phrase in short calls with real silence between them, like a vocal line.
- Work microtonal, unresolved bends deliberately, not just full-step target bends.
- Keep the gain at driven-lead level, not distortion — the pick attack should still read.
Post-Rock Crescendo
Level 11- Start the riff clean and unaccompanied; only add gain and drums on the repeat.
- Write the arrangement as a volume and density curve first, notes second.
- Use delay repeats as a rhythmic layer, not just ambience, once the build begins.
- Practice the transition point into full gain as its own exercise, not just 'the loud part'.
- Let a single motif survive from the clean intro through the peak, so the build stays recognizable.
Math-Rock Angularity
Level 04- Isolate the odd-meter grouping (e.g. 2+2+3) and count it out loud before playing it.
- Keep the tone clean-to-light-crunch so the interval leaps stay legible.
- Practice hands separately: fretting-hand shape first, then add the picking pattern.
- Alternate tapped and picked notes inside the same lick to compare articulation.
- Loop a two-bar phrase at a slow tempo until the accents feel automatic, then raise tempo.
Jazz Comping
Level 02- Voice chords on the middle four strings first — low root-position shapes get muddy fast.
- Practice comping rhythms against a metronome on beats 2 and 4 only, no downbeats.
- Use fingerstyle or thumb-lead picking so the attack stays soft under a soloist.
- Walk simple chord-tone bass lines between changes with the thumb while comping on top.
- Leave silence on beat one sometimes — comping is a conversation, not a wall of chords.
Ambient Drone
Level 13- Start from a single sustained note or open-string dyad, not a chord progression.
- Use an e-bow or volume swells so the attack transient disappears entirely.
- Layer a looper part first, then improvise sparse melodic fragments on top.

Prog Odd-Meter Riffing
Level 09- Write the riff's rhythm on paper first (e.g. 7/8 as 2+2+3) before touching the guitar.
- Practice the meter with simple downstrokes on one note before adding real pitches.
- Loop the bar that changes meter in isolation until the switch feels natural.

Is the practice brief written fresh each time, or fixed content?
It's fixed content, recombined. Every technique, effect, player, role and pattern on this page is reference material written for the dashboard ahead of time. Selecting items composes them into a practice brief using a fixed set of if/then rules defined in this page's own code — every sentence the brief shows you traces back to a specific row or card above it.
What is a “practice brief”?
A short, structured reference sheet — setup, techniques, effects, tone target, session plan — assembled from whatever you've selected on this page, meant to be printed or read on a phone in a rehearsal room. It replaces flipping between ten browser tabs mid-rehearsal.
Are the genres on this page all real?
78 of the 100 genres listed are real, documented genres. The other 22 are openly invented mashups built for this dashboard, and every one of them carries a visible “coined” label wherever it appears in a table, list or the practice brief — never presented as a real genre.
Were the guitarist facts on this page checked?
The specific, checkable claims — Django Reinhardt's fretting-hand injury, Wes Montgomery's thumb technique, Tony Iommi's prosthetic fingertips, Albert King's reversed-strung guitar, Jimi Hendrix's restrung Stratocaster, Eddie Van Halen's tapping, B.B. King's “Lucille”, Robert Fripp's tape looping, Kevin Shields' tremolo-arm technique, and Michael Hedges' percussive harmonics — were independently checked against named sources before publishing (marked “checked” in Section 07's table). The remaining entries use general, well-established era/genre/technique characterisation rather than unverified specifics; see Sources below.
How was the colour-coding replaced?
Every category badge on this page uses a distinct symbol, a distinct border style (solid, dashed, dotted or double) for its broader family, and — wherever the source data includes an intensity or register value — a matching border weight and fill. The Sonic Spectrum uses a plain lightness ramp instead, since its 15 levels are ordered, not categorical. None of it depends on hue, so it reads the same in greyscale, print, or to a colour-blind eye.

This page states a great deal as reference (technique names, effect mechanisms, practice methodology) that doesn't need a citation because it isn't a factual claim about a real person or event. The specific, checkable claims — mostly in Section 07 and the frequency figures in Section 09 — are sourced below. Anything this pass could not verify to its own standard was softened or left out rather than asserted; see the note under Section 07's table.
