Thrash metal — The Line Engine
A riff is a line you traverse. Every attack is a discrete, countable event, and the interest is in how many of them fit in a bar and how the line moves between them.
The riff types, from the only real taxonomy
- There is one peer-reviewed classification of metal riff types — Garza's 2021 study in Music Theory Online, covering 1970 to 2020 — and it names six: straight/open divisions, breakdown, long durations, pedal-tone, weak-beat syncopation, and tremolo. Everything else in circulation is trade shorthand.
- The pedal-tone riff is flagged as thrash's workhorse: a repeated unfretted, palm-muted low note under moving upper voices, tied explicitly to the genre's speed and virtuosic display. If you name one mechanism, name this one.
- The gallop is an eighth note plus two sixteenths in one beat — and despite having three subdivisions it is emphatically not a triplet. “Battery” is the canonical gallop; “Raining Blood” is the canonical reverse gallop, two sixteenths then an eighth.
- Weak-beat syncopation is borrowed from drum vocabulary, displacing onsets with rests and ties, and it is usually deployed at double time. This is the category groove metal will later take and build an entire genre out of.
The pitch material, measured
- An academic analysis of Metallica finds the riffs use every note except the major sixth, the major seventh and the major third — systematic avoidance of anything implying a major mode, over a base of natural minor and minor pentatonic with chromatic additions, particularly the flat five and flat two.
- But “thrash removed the blues” is false as stated. The same analysis finds blues-derived harmonic motion retained, particularly plagal IV–I. What thrash dropped is blues melodic vocabulary — bends, pentatonic phrasing, the major third. The claim conflates the two.
- Harmonic rhythm is fast, and it is a real criterion. Garry Sharpe-Young: “the fast rapid chord changes often define traditional thrash metal.” This is what the three genres downstream will each slow down in a different way.
- Slayer's “atonality” is journalistic shorthand. The technical lessons that actually break down Hanneman's playing describe E Locrian and the E diminished half-whole scale — modal and chromatic frameworks, not a twelve-tone row. “Dissonance-seeking within scalar frameworks” is less punchy and more accurate.
The right hand, with the one number worth having
- “Master of Puppets” is roughly 212 BPM in eighth notes, near-continuously downstroked for about fifty seconds — about seven downstrokes per second, sustained. It is the single best-sourced tempo figure in the genre.
- Downpicking was a competitive sport and the participants admit to cheating. Hetfield: “It was always a kind of contest, who could down-pick the fastest.” Gary Holt: “Everybody cheats, even Hetfield cheats.”
- Palm muting reduces midrange and emphasises the low and high ends, shortening decay and unifying guitar and drum timbre — an asserted spectral claim from a musicology thesis rather than a measurement, but a considered one.
- No measured physical limit for downpicking exists. The encyclopedia article making biomechanical claims cites a warm-up video and a web calculator, and the best-informed picking-mechanics community states no threshold at all.
Form, and the most useful correction in the guide
- Thrash is not through-composed. A 195-track peer-reviewed corpus study across twenty canonical albums finds 87% fit compound AABA form or a close variant, with riffs grouped into modules repeated in foursquare counts of two, four or eight. Buildup intros are near-universal; pre-verses appear in 46.7% of songs; re-intros in 56.7%.
- Metallica conform to that form in 89% of songs — thirty-one of thirty-five. Megadeth's Peace Sells contains not one conforming song. That is hard, quantified support for the “Mustaine is structurally angular” reputation, and it sits oddly against the fact that Metallica are simultaneously the more harmonically chromatic of the two.
- “Through-composed” is a borrowed term of art. Its rigorous definition was developed on a corpus of Radiohead, Animal Collective and Dillinger Escape Plan — post-2000 material, not eighties thrash. Thrash songs are riff-dense and still largely modular.
- Nobody has counted the riffs. The claim that thrash packs in more riffs per song than other metal is pervasive and, as far as any accessible source goes, entirely unquantified.
The scenes, differentiated by what they actually played
- Bay Area: fast palm-muted downpicking, 160–200 BPM, relentless eighth notes, long multi-part songs with tempo shifts, barked vocals with gang-shout answers.
- East Coast: faster and more straight-ahead. Danny Lilker, in his own words: “we took influences from the thriving New York hardcore scene, so our stuff was more straight ahead and faster… the Bay Area bands seemed to concentrate more on melody and technicality,” and “the Bay Area musicians had more NWOBHM in their sound.”
- Teutonic: rooted in Motörhead and Venom rather than the American lineage — raspy vocals, frantic double bass — then diverging sharply, with Coroner going technical and progressive while Sodom absorbed death metal and hardcore.
- Brazilian: raw production treated as an asset, and the first fusion of thrash with Afro-Brazilian percussion and chant. Within Brazil, Belo Horizonte skewed extreme and São Paulo skewed crossover.
- And the hardcore influence was not regional property. Scott Ian: “Listen to what Slayer were doing, and you're not gonna tell me that they weren't into hardcore.”
