Imply the low end rather than produce it. The documented tunings are far higher than the reputation, and the weight comes from fuzz harmonics and a fundamental your ear reconstructs rather than hears.
The tuning finding, which reverses the genre's reputation
- Where the data actually exists, stoner clusters between C standard and D standard — a major third to a whole step below standard E. Kyuss are documented in C standard, with Homme describing experimenting at “B, and C” because there was “no example” to follow. Fu Manchu's Scott Hill gives D standard as the baseline, dropping to C on specific songs. Queens of the Stone Age are documented in C standard.
- That is low for 1970s hard rock and not low for modern metal. It sits well above the drop-A and F♯-standard territory that became normal in the 2000s. A standard-tuned eight-string guitar goes lower than any of it.
- So where does the weight come from? Not from fundamental pitch. The best single piece of evidence is that Fu Manchu's bassist Brad Davis reportedly uses no pedals at all — his heavy tone is a 1969 Ampeg SVT driven into natural overdrive. In a genre built on fuzz mythology, one of its heaviest documented bass tones is amp saturation and nothing else.
- Caveat honestly: Sleep, Truckfighters and Red Fang could not be confirmed, and Sleep in particular has a reputation for extreme tuning that may be a real exception. The defensible claim is about the bands that can be verified, not about the genre as a law.
What fuzz actually does, and the problem it creates
- Fuzz is not just more distortion. Overdrive soft-clips; distortion clips harder and more consistently; fuzz clips until the signal is nearly a square wave and adds complex overtones by way of a frequency multiplier. It is the richest harmonic generator of the three, and typically a simple transistor circuit rather than an op-amp with diodes.
- And here is the trap. A classic guitar fuzz circuit has low input impedance and tight coupling capacitors, so the low fundamental is mostly lost when the signal is heavily clipped — what comes back is upper harmonics and buzz. That is precisely why bass-specific fuzz emerged as its own product category from the late 1980s, redesigned to keep the fundamental alongside the grit.
- Which means the genre's weight is substantially reconstructed rather than reproduced. The missing fundamental is real psychoacoustics: when a complex tone's fundamental is absent but harmonics remain, the ear still reports the pitch of the missing fundamental. Licklider's 1954 masking experiments disproved the old theory that the ear physically regenerates it; the modern account is temporal — the combined harmonics produce a waveform that repeats at the fundamental's rate, and the auditory system extracts that repetition rate.
- Do not put a percentage on it. No source quantifies how much of perceived heaviness is reconstructed versus reproduced. The qualitative statement is safe and the numeric one is invented.
The rigs, and one correction worth making
- Josh Homme did not play an SVT. The documented amp, in his own words, is an Ampeg VT-40 — a 40-watt valve combo he has had since he was eleven: “It was so heavy to lift as an 11-year-old.” His Kyuss-era touring rig is separately documented as Marshall JCM900 heads through Ampeg 8x10 bass cabinets and Ampeg V4 and V4-B heads. Still bass-voiced amplification for a guitar, which is the interesting part — just not an SVT.
- Scott Reeder's bass technique is genuinely unusual and rarely mentioned. He plays left-handed on a right-handed-strung bass, which he says rules out popping, and describes his Kyuss-era approach as “droning on one string and playing chords on the other things.” His amp was a 1970 SVT with “all the tone knobs all the way up.”
- The generator parties are among the best-sourced facts in the genre — Homme has described them consistently for decades and 1993 video exists. But the claim that generator power shaped the gear is unsourced, and the documented backline is large and power-hungry rather than obviously power-thrifty.
- And the famous Homme quote is usually misremembered. It is not “robot rock.” It is “trance robot music for girls” — about who the music was for, not about repetition as a method.
The groove, and the honest state of the evidence
- Stoner is mid-tempo where doom is slow, and the lineage is blues-rock jamming rather than metal. The genre is described as reaching back to the “psychedelic, proto-metallic jamming” of Cream, Sabbath, Deep Purple and Hawkwind — a loose, extended, groove-first vocabulary rather than metal's sectional riff-and-breakdown one.
- Ben Ratliff's summary is the best single mechanism-level line available: “What stoner rock delivers, slowed down and magnified, is the riff, the persistent legacy of Mississippi blues.”
- But there is no transcription-level rhythmic analysis of this genre anywhere. No swing-ratio measurements, no meter breakdowns, nothing. The “laid-back, swung, behind the beat” characterisation is critic's language, not musicology. Say so rather than dressing it up.
- Chris Goss's production philosophy is documented and it is not technical: “if you have good ears and a good spirit about what you're doing, the sonics will take second place.” On room sound he names his poles directly — “the room air around Led Zeppelin versus the up-front, compressed, no air about The Beatles.”
