Speed metal — The Right Hand Engine

Speed as the subject. Except that the genre named for speed turns out not to be distinguished by speed — it is distinguished by what it refused to give up.

The category is genuinely contested, and the contest is the interesting part

Three incompatible senses are in circulation. A distinct genre between NWOBHM and thrash; a plain synonym for thrash; and a loose descriptor for fast traditional metal. All three are real, and the second is the 1980s usage.
AllMusic does not maintain a separate speed metal style at all. Its page is titled “Speed/Thrash Metal” and describes speed metal as the thing that “quickly evolved into thrash.” Wikipedia then borrows AllMusic's definition of a merged category to define a separate one.
Wikipedia's own thrash article concedes it: “The names 'thrash metal' and 'speed metal' were generally used interchangeably throughout the 1980s.”
The most-cited book source contradicts itself across facing pages. Ian Christe, Sound of the Beast, p.137: thrash “relies more on long, wrenching rhythmic breaks, while speed metal is a cleaner and more musically intricate subcategory.” p.138: “There was little intrinsic difference between speed metal and thrash metal.” Wikipedia cites both, one to establish the distinction and one to undercut it.
And the claim that the modern sense was “defined retrospectively in the 1990s” rests on a 2025 Greek-language webzine post. It is probably true. The sourcing is still a scandal.

Where the line actually falls — and it is not tempo

Pitch material is the real fault line. Thrash uses chromatic material emphasising the tritone and the flat second; an academic analysis of Metallica finds the riffs use “all notes except the major sixth, the major seventh, and the major third” — systematic avoidance of anything that implies a major mode. Speed metal kept the major third. That is the difference.
Harmonic rhythm is the second criterion, and it is Sharpe-Young's: fast chord changes define thrash, slow ones define power metal, and speed metal sits between with fast tempo and moderate harmonic rhythm.
Vocals are the criterion everyone actually applies. John Cyriis, Dan Beehler, John Gallagher, Kai Hansen — clean high register descended from Halford and Dickinson, not from Araya's bark or Hetfield's rasp.
So the honest definition is negative: speed metal is the music that went fast without abandoning the melodic and harmonic vocabulary of NWOBHM. Thrash went fast and replaced that vocabulary. There is no tempo dataset separating them, and the claim that speed metal is faster than thrash is supported by nothing.
One criterion to drop: “thrash removed the blues” is false as stated. Metallica retain blues-derived harmonic motion, particularly plagal IV–I. What thrash drops is blues melodic vocabulary — bends, pentatonic phrasing, the major third. The common claim conflates the two.

There is no first speed metal song, and the best evidence is that nobody claims it

Judas Priest, “Exciter” (1978) has the strongest case and Les Binks' double kick is remarkably early. K.K. Downing claims speed and never genre: “We just set out to write the fastest track ever written.” Per his memoir, Binks came up with the intro accidentally, at a soundcheck.
Motörhead, “Overkill” (1979) is usually credited, and the influence claim is far stronger than the priority claim. Lars Ulrich: “Phil Taylor was the first drummer I ever heard play that double kick drum thing.” That is a statement about his listening, not about chronology — “Exciter” predates it by fourteen months. The origin is an accident too: Taylor had just taken delivery of a kit with two kick drums and, per Eddie Clarke, “starts going mental cos he's got these two bass drums and he doesn't know what to fucking do with them.” Ten minutes later they had the song.
Accept, “Fast as a Shark” (1982) — Wolf Hoffmann disowns it: “We didn't really want to start a whole genre or anything.” (Side fact: the intro is a snippet of a German folk song from 1830, and the band did not know its later associations.)
Deep Purple's “Speed King” allegedly “inspired the genre's name” — an uncited assertion on Wikipedia. And Queen's “Stone Cold Crazy” sits at 120 BPM double-time, which one academic analysis notes “pale[s] against thrash standards.”
Taylor's real claim is not priority but idiom: the continuous, song-length double-kick pattern as a structural engine rather than as a fill. No source states this cleanly and the evidence supports it.

Downpicking, with the one number worth having

“Master of Puppets” is roughly 212 BPM in eighth notes, near-continuously downstroked for about fifty seconds. That is about seven downstrokes per second, sustained — the reference point everything else is measured against, and the single best-sourced tempo figure in thrash.
Do not confuse that with Troy Grady's speed figures, which are alternate picking. “Hyperpicking” at over 300 BPM sixteenths is twenty notes per second — but half of those are upstrokes, so the downstroke rate is about ten per second. Same order of magnitude as Hetfield. Anyone quoting 300 BPM as a downpicking figure has made a category error.
No measured physical limit exists. Wikipedia's downpicking article makes biomechanical claims citing a warm-up video and a web calculator. The best-informed picking-mechanics community states no threshold at all.
The tone difference is real as perception and unmeasured as fact. Nobody appears to have run an acoustic study isolating downstroke from upstroke timbre on a distorted guitar. The proposed mechanism — uniform attack angle, velocity and string-contact order — is plausible and would be easy to measure.

The drums, and the German exit

The skank beat — the “Slayer beat” — has kick and snare alternating with the ride hand in unison with both. In a traditional blast the ride hand is in unison with the kick only. That single difference is the whole distinction.
Blast beats came from punk, not metal. Documented early instances run Asocial's 1982 demo, Beastie Boys' “Riot Fight” (1982), D.R.I.'s “No Sense” (1983). Mick Harris is credited with coining the term, not inventing the technique. Pete Sandoval's credit is the most musically meaningful and the least repeated: first to use it in metronomic time rather than as arrhythmic texture.
Dave Lombardo agrees jazz drummers got there first. Sam Woodyard with Ellington in 1962; Tony Williams on Trio of Doom, 1979.
The German scene is the direct ancestor of power metal, and the transition is documented to the month. Helloween's Walls of Jericho (18 November 1985) is speed metal with Kai Hansen singing. Kiske arrives in 1986. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I is May 1987. The guitars did not change. The voice and the harmonic rhythm did.
And the fastest-tempo question is unanswerable for a good reason. Gene Hoglan on Darkness Descends, the album usually nominated: “We actually slowed down drastically when we recorded it. We were much faster before that.” Recorded tempo is not the ceiling — it is a take the band could hold together.
